Uma hora no tanque de isolamento do Dr. Bishop

No seriado Fringe, o Dr. Bishop utiliza um tanque de flutuação, ou tanque de privação dos sentidos - floatation tank, isolation tank, sensory deprivation tank, ou até mesmo think tank - para induzir a personagem Olivia a desenvolver seus poderes mentais e se transportar para outras dimensões. Descobri um desses aqui em São Paulo - um dos motivos de gostar tanto desta cidade é este, aqui você encontra qualquer coisa - e experimentei uma sessão de flutuação. Infelizmente não encontrei outras dimensões, mas a experiência é deveras interessante.

O tanque

O tanque de flutuação é uma cápsula com isolamento acústico e luminoso, onde você flutua em uma solução de água salgada, que faz com que você não afunde - como no mar morto - , mantida em temperatura igual à do corpo humano. Utilizada pela primeira vez em 1954 pelo cientista John C. Lilly para testar os efeitos da privação dos sentidos - ele também fez pesquisas sobre comunicação entre humanos e golfinhos e drogas pscicodélicas :) (é este à direita na foto abaixo) - , hoje em dia é comumente encontrada em clínicas de medicina alternativa, relaxamento e meditação. Foi exatamente onde encontrei uma.

A experiência

A sensação de flutuar no vazio é o ponto alto da experiência. Sem luz, sem barulho, sem esforço algum, é o mais próximo que já estive da gravidade zero. Além disso como a temperatura da água se iguala à do corpo, você também não sente a água, ou esquece que a sente. É como se você perdesse a sensação de limite físico do corpo. Um artifício engenhoso. Nos primeiros minutos o corpo e a mente vão se ajustando às restrições do ambiente, e depois de uns 15 minutos o ritmo da respiração desacelera, na verdade tudo desacelera, e dai as propriedades de relaxamento, tanto físico quanto mental. Quanto à questão da meditação e expansão da consciência, deixo a critério do que cada um acredita. No meu caso achei um ótimo ambiente para pensar e refletir, parecido com aqueles momentos antes de dormir, ou logo ao acordar.

Signal-to-Noise

Todos os sentidos estão sempre lidando com a busca de sinais significativos e com ruídos nesta busca, que variam de acordo com a sensibilidade do dispositivo. Existe não só na física mas nas questões do dia a dia uma razão entre sinal e ruído. No mundo moderno, nas grandes metrópoles e nas novas redes digitais, a quantidade de ruído tem aumentado. Vertiginosamente. No processo de digitalização de um sinal, dependendo do volume do ruído, ele ao invés de ser entendido como um "zero", passa a ser medido como um "um". Um "Sim" no lugar de um "Não". Uma má interpretação. Um erro causado pelo volume de ruído. E não existe "a prova" de ruído. Mesmo isolado no tanque, totalmente imóvel, você escuta o coração batendo - extremamente alto - e cada respiração. Nossa própria existência é geradora de ruídos. Recomendo a experiência, e caso encontrem outras dimensões por favor me avisem. Até a próxima. --x--

Journey – A Jornada

Bem.. como eu começo este post? Já estou a algum tempo tentando descrever de forma simples a experiência do jogo para PlayStation 3 "Journey", lançado no ano passado, e não encontro uma forma. "Jogue!" É o melhor que posso lhes dizer. Vamos fazer então como no jogo: tudo começa com uma figura humanoide, envolta em um robe vermelho, sem nome, história ou características previamente explicadas, sozinho em um vasto deserto, que avista a distância uma montanha.

Simples.

Sem instrução alguma (nenhum texto, NENHUM, em TODO o jogo) instintivamente você sabe o objetivo de sua jornada: alcançar o cume daquele distante monte, descobrir o que existe lá em cima. E este conceito, tão amplo e de fácil apropriação em qualquer cultura ou pelo contexto de cada jogador, vai se desenhando nas interações e na jogabilidade, na ambientação e clima criados pela arte e trilha sonora do jogo. Um jogo sobre um conceito. Um jogo que pela extrema simplicidade, permite que cada jogador se reconheça na jornada do personagem.

Sutil.

Uma das "lições" que se pode aprender nesta jornada se revela numa interação bastante sutil. Durante a história o jogador pode encontrar outros personagens (outros jogadores) na mesma jornada, e escolher unir forças ou não para chegar ao final. Juntos os jogadores podem um recarregar a energia do outro, uma característica que muda completamente a jogabilidade e "ensina" uma parte crucial da "lição" a que me referi. Além desta interação, várias experiências desenhadas durante a jornada refletem situações de superação de obstáculos, busca por objetivos, descobertas marcantes pelo caminho. Todas envoltas em visual e música que comunicam emoções universais, da solidão e do desamparo até a conquista e o júbilo. Ok, me empolguei aqui, admito.

Original?

Devo ter levado umas duas ou três horas para concluir a jornada. Algo como o tempo de um longa metragem. E fiquei extremamente impressionado com o poder da história, do conceito e deste sentimento de se reconhecer em um jogo. É uma jornada visual, sonora, sensorial. Não acho que a palavra seja original, mas sim atual. Este é um jogo que tem um pouco de várias coisas que me inspiram nos dias de hoje: linguagem estritamente visual (Instagram, Vine, Interfaces e afins), histórias universais (a famosa "Jornada do Herói" é a ponta do iceberg de uma série de histórias e conhecimentos globais) e o poder da jornada (traçar grandes objetivos, a aprendizagem pelo caminho, as descobertas e experiências práticas vividas, e a visualização de futuros possíveis). Um jogo que recomendo para quem gosta de games e principalmente para quem não gosta.

The Journey

Well, how Can I start this post? I´ve been trying for a while to describe in a simple way the experience of the game for PlayStation 2 ¨Jorney¨, released last year, and I can’t find a way. ¨Play it!¨. It’s the best that I can say. So let’s do Just like in the game: everything starts with a humanoid figure, wrapped in a red robe, no name, story or features previously explained, alone in a vast desert, whom sees in a distance a mountain.

Simple

Without any instruction ( no text, not at all, through the whole game) instinctively you know your journey goal: to reach the summit of that far away hill, and find out what is up there. This concept, so broad and easy to appropriation in any culture or by the context of each player, starts to designing trough the interactions and the gameplay, in the ambiance and the atmosphere created by the art and the soundtrack of the game. A game about concept. A game by extreme simplicity, allow each player to recognize yourself during the journey of the character.

Subtle

One of the ¨lessons¨ that can be learn on this journey unfolds in a subtle interaction. During the story the player can find others characters (others players) on the same journey, and choose to join forces or not to reach the end. Together the players can recharge their energy into one another, a feature that changes completely the gameplay and ¨teach¨ a part of the crucial ¨lesson ¨that a referred to. Besides this interaction, several experiences designed during the journey reflect situations of overcoming obstacles, searching for goals, striking discoveries allong the way. All wrapped in visual and music that communicated the universal emotions, of loneliness and of helplessness to the elation and achievement. Fine, I got carried away here, I admit.

Original

I must had taken about two or three hours to accomplish the journey. It´s something as the time of a movie. And I was extremely impressed with the power of the story, of the concept and of this feeling of recognize yourself in a game. It’s a visual journey audible and sensory. I don’t think that the word is ¨original¨, but actually current. This is a game that has a little bit of lots of things that inspire me nowadays: strictly visual language (Instagram, Vine, Interfaces and others), universal stories ( the famous ¨Journey of the Hero¨ it’s the tip of the iceberg of a series of stories and global knowledge) the power of the journey ( drawing big goals, the learning through the way, the discoveries and the practical experiences lived, and the visualization of possible futures). A game that I recommend to who likes games and mostly to who doesn’t.

Basta começar, escrever para um público, saber captar sua atenção, redigir de forma clara e objetiva, e, principalmente, escrever sobre conteúdos relevantes. Seja para escrever seu próprio blog, ou colaborar com algum já existente. Escrever em um blog ajuda divulgar seu trabalho e impulsionar sua carreira, independente da área de conhecimento. Blogar é uma forma de compartilhar conhecimentos sobre a área onde atua, opiniões, informações e novidades. E esta busca gera credibilidade, que junto com a visibilidade são duas coisas vitais para crescer em qualquer carreira.

Quantas coisas não acontecem ao acaso em nossas vidas. Se prestar atenção ao seu dia a dia certamente notará o impacto do fator sorte nas pequenas decisões. E estas, somadas, acabam impactando também nas grandes. No trabalho, na escola, no trânsito, no restaurante, do processo criativo de desenvolvimento de uma interface à escolha da cor de um par de sapatos, o acaso está presente. Na história são vários os casos, do café à insulina, e seus efeitos em toda a civilização podem ser bem expressivos.

Penicilina, avanços na medicina e o aumento da expectativa de vida

A descoberta da penicilina se deu de forma peculiar. Uma sequência de coincidências possibilitou Alexander Fleming fazer as observações necessárias para chegar á conclusão de que poderíamos desenvolver substâncias antibactericidas. Isso foi a chave para futura produção de antibióticos utilizados no tratamento de uma infinidade de doenças. Na minha opinião esta é A descoberta do século passado. A partir dela vários novos avanços foram feitos na área da saúde. No início do século passado, a chance de passar dos 30 ou 40 anos de idade era bem pequena. Só para se ter uma ideia (mesmo que de forma simplista) a expectativa média de vida no Brasil hoje é de 73,4 anos. Em 1910 era de 33,4 anos. Em cerca de 3 gerações passamos a viver em média o dobro do que viviam nossos bisavós.

Cecília Gimenez e A restauração

A restauração do afresco Ecce Homo (Elias García Martínez) feita pela artista amadora Cecília Gimenez acabou se tornando um ícone pop global. Atraiu a atenção para um artista praticamente desconhecido, para uma pintura original de pouco valor, levantou a discussão sobre uma necessidade de se revisar a igreja nos dias de hoje, atraiu milhares de visitantes ao Santuário de Misericórdia em Zaragoza, na Espanha.

O Conclave

Após a renúncia do Papa Bento XVI, iniciou-se o processo de sucessão ao cargo máximo da igreja católica. A escolha acontece durante o Conclave, onde os cardeais se isolam e procedem, guiados pelo Espírito Santo, a votação para eleger um novo pontífice. Sobre Ilhas

Fui perguntado recentemente sobre o que leio na internet, quem acompanho no twitter, quem me influencia, como formo minha opinião para escrever sobre os assuntos que escrevo, como acompanho tendências do mercado digital e de educação, etecetera e tal. Achei que a pergunta, apesar de longa, valia um breve texto aqui. Acho que ela é a atualização daquela sobre "quais jornais/revistas você lê pela manhã". Diferente da resposta "profissional" para estas perguntas, que é de procurar por hubs, por pontos de conexão nesta grande rede, eu uso uma abordagem diferente: "Eu procuro por ilhas".

Charles Darwin e Galápagos

Em 1831, Charles Darwin velejou até as Ilhas Galapagos, e 30 anos depois publicou sua teoria da evolução. Esta é, na minha opinião, uma das ideias mais complexas e revolucionárias da história da civilização (muito mais complexa do que, por exemplo, a de que a Terra é redonda). Várias das principais pistas que o levaram à elaboração de sua teoria foram encontradas nestas ilhas isoladas e tranquilas.

Austrália e os Cisnes Negros

Antes de a Austrália ser descoberta, todos os cisnes do mundo eram brancos. A exceção estava escondida de nós por um ambiente isolado e propício à diferenciação / evolução / adaptação da espécie. O que nos leva ao problema da indução proposto por David Hume no século XVIII e à sua solução pela Falseabilidade de Karl Popper, já nos anos 30.

O conhecimento como uma ilha

O próprio Marcelo Gleiser costuma dizer que "A felicidade é você poder escolher ao que você vai se prender. Felicidade e Liberdade são coisas que andam de mãos dadas". E hoje a possibilidade de escolha daquilo ao qual você irá se prender - aqui me refiro especificamente ao conhecimento - é crucial para determinar o quanto você se satisfaz nos meios digitais.

Ilhas geográficas

Quando digo que procuro por ilhas, isto tem um aspecto geográfico, e não apenas abstrato ou filosófico. Na prática o mundo real ainda possui barreiras físicas, e nada melhor do que uma ilha, uma ilha MESMO, cercada de água por todos os lados, para isolar e permitir a evolução de uma ideia. Costumo olhar sempre para o que acontece nas minhas ilhas favoritas, e isto influencia em todas as respostas das perguntas sobre as quais me propus escrever aqui. São elas: Japão, Islândia, Hawaii, Cuba, Reino Unido, Nova Zelândia.

Ilhas virtuais

Onde estão as ilhas virtuais, aqueles locais onde existe uma espécie de ambiente propício para a evolução de novas ideias? Algumas delas você já deve estar cansado de saber: Berlim, NY, Califórnia, os centros universitários americanos como Harvard, MIT, e por ai vai. Outras ilhas fáceis de encontrar são os grupos de investimento, que apoiam e aportam capital em diversas startups. Outras ilhas tem de ser buscadas com ferramentas e técnicas mais apuradas, filtrando onde são publicados os conteúdos originais que os sites de tendências e curadoria replicam, e por quem. Minhas ilhas favoritas estão em lugares como: Tumblr, TED, Twitter (que apesar do barulho, bem filtrado vira um ótimo canal), e principalmente Blogs - independentes, feitos por um ou poucos autores, apaixonados pelo que escrevem. --x--

Islands

Recently I was asked about what I read on the internet, who I follow on twiiter, who influences me, how I formed my opinion to write about the topics I write, how I follow the trends of digital market and education, etc. I thought the question, besides being a long question, was wroth writing a brief post in here. I think the question it is an new version of the ¨Which newspaper or magazines do you read in the morning?¨. Unlike the ¨professional¨ answer to these questions, which is searching for hubs, for connections point in the big nest, I use a different approach: ¨I search for islands¨.

Charles Darwin and Galapagos

In 1831, Charles Darwin sailed to the Galapagos Islands and 30 years later published the theory of evolution. In my opinion, this theory is one of most complex and revolutionary ideas of the civilization history (much more complex than, for example, the one of the Earth being Spherical). Several of the key clues that led him to the elaboration of his theory were founded in theses isolated and quiet islands.

Australia and the Black Swan

Before Australia being discovered all swans in the whole world were white. The exception were hide form us by an isolated and quiet environment prone to a differentiation / evolution / adaptation of these species. Which bring us to the problem of induction proposed by David Hume in the XVIII century and the solution by Falsifiability by Karl Popper in the 30s. Knowlage as an Island Even Marcelo Gleise uses to say ¨Happiness it’s you been able to choose what you going to learn. Happiness and Freedom hold hands all the time¨. Nowadays the possibility of chose of what you will be attach – here I refer specifically to knowledge – is crucial to determine how much you meet in digital media.

Geographical Islands

When I say look for Islands, it has a geographical aspect, it is not just an abstract or philosophical way. In practice the real world still has physical barriers and nothing is better than an Island, a real one surrounded by water to isolate and enable the evolution of an idea. I use to always look for what happens in my favorite islands, and this impacts in all answers of my questions about that I set out to write about in here. They are: Japan, Iceland, Hawaii, Cuba, UK and New Zealand.

Virtual Islands

Where are the virtual islands? Those places where exist a kind of environment prone to evolution of new ideas. Some of them you may be already tired of hearing about: Berlin, NY, California, american universities like Harvard, MIT and others. Other islands are easy to be founded, are group of investment, that support and contribute their capital in several startups. Some other islands must be searched with better techniques and tools, filtering where are published the original contents normally replicated by trends and curated websites, and also by whom. My favorite islands are: Tumblr TED, Twitter (which despite all the noise, if it is well filtered becomes a great channel) and mainly Blogs – independent, made by one or a few authors, who are passionate about writing. Sete anos em São Paulo

Sete anos atrás fiz check-in no hotel New City. Era um dia chuvoso. Nome e clima apropriados. Desde então venho aprendendo como viver numa megacidade. O excesso de tudo - informação, cultura, pessoas - nos faz mais objetivos. O grande segredo para sobreviver em São Paulo por sete anos? Minha resposta até então: simplificar.

São Paulo de Piratininga

Piratininga vem do tupi "peixe seco". Pirá = peixe. Tininga = Seco. Referência aos peixes que morriam às margens do rio Anhangabaú depois que este transbordava pelas cheias e que findavam por secar expostos ao sol. Anhangabaú, tbm do tupi, é o rio dos malefícios do diabo.

Pessoas

Uma cidade com mais de 11 milhões de habitantes. Sexta maior do mundo. Maior das Américas (isso mesmo, maior do que todas as americanas). Maior do hemisfério sul (não que isso represente muito). A região metropolitana tem quase 20 milhões. Fica atrás apenas de Tóquio, Seul e a Cidade do México. Aqui vivem japoneses, italianos, judeus, muçulmanos, coreanos, indianos, americanos, e mais. Não são só números. Você acaba conhecendo pessoas destas nacionalidades. A quantidade e a diversidade desta população se vê nas filas. O maior valor desta megacidade é a possibilidade de conviver e conhecer todas estas pessoas.

Japoneses

Os japoneses de São Paulo são um caso a parte. São os mais paulistas dos paulistas. Eles só se sentem verdadeiramente em casa quando estão em São Paulo. No resto do Brasil e do mundo, mesmo em países asiáticos, são vistos como estrangeiros. O contato com a cultura japonesa é uma das melhores coisas de São Paulo.

Como diferenciar japoneses, chineses e coreanos

Importante não generalizá-los. São bem diferentes culturalmente e tem algumas diferenças físicas que com o tempo ficam mais fáceis de serem percebidas. Preste atenção ao tamanho dos olhos: maiores japonês, menores coreano. Formato do rosto: arredondado chinês, triangular japonês, queixo quadrado coreano. Atenção pois estou generalizando nestes detalhes e principalmente: na mistura do Brasil eles enganam.

Então, ai vem uma desculpa

Enquanto em Belo Horizonte as pessoas começam as frases com "Aqui", em São Paulo se usa "Então". Esta interjeição em geral exprime uma tarefa que não pode ser cumprida a contento, um adiamento, uma adversidade, uma desculpa esfarrapada. Fique atento, sempre que alguém ao lhe responder uma pergunta começar com um "Então", esta promessa de encontro, de visita, de entrega de algum produto ou serviço está comprometida.

O quadrado mágico e a bolha do Itaim

Morei seis dos sete anos no bairro Itaim Bibi (Itaim, do tupi pedra pequena), numa área que denominei meu quadrado mágico. Escrevi sobre isso aqui. Importante estabelecer uma rotina simples e uma campo de atuação, onde consiga se aprofundar e se sinta em casa. Uma megacidade é como aquele mapa escuro de jogos como Age of Empires, onde você precisa enviar os batedores para desbravá-lo e conhecer seus limites.

Do what you want to do

NON DVCOR DVCO. Não sou conduzido, conduzo. O lema da cidade. Seu bordão. Em São Paulo é necessário saber onde se quer chegar. É necessário assumir o controle das coisas.

Cinza e verde

Estas deveriam ser as cores de São Paulo. Cinza do concreto armado, verde das samambaias. Cinza do minhocão, verde do Ibirapuera (do tupi pau podre ou árvore apodrecida). Cinza da chuva, verde das árvores tombadas. Cinza da placa dos carros, verde do farol.

Tribos e palavrões

"Aqui nessa tribo ninguém quer a sua catequização. Falamos a sua língua, mas não entendemos seu sermão. Nós rimos alto, bebemos e falamos palavrão. Mas não sorrimos à toa, Não sorrimos à toa." Arnaldo Antunes

Terra da garoa

São Paulo não é mais a terra da garoa. Garoa, garoa mesmo, só muito de vez em quando. O clima de São Paulo é em geral muito parecido com a cidade: caótico. É comum amanhecer um céu azul, chover, fazer calor, ficar frio, ter ventania e à noite abrir o céu novamente. Morar em São Paulo é ter sempre consigo um charda-chuvas e uma blusa de frio, mesmo em um dia ensolarado de verão.

O túmulo do samba

São Paulo não combina com Samba. Minha opinião. Definitivamente. A malandragem aqui é profissional. As mulatas são capas de revista. A boemia paga cover artístico e dez porcento. São Paulo não tem as curvas exuberantes do Rio. Mas tem algumas casas de samba e bons sambistas (afinal aqui tem de tudo), e a tribo do samba tem seu espaço. A exuberância de São Paulo é ser uma jukebox.

Existe amor em SP

São Paulo é de uma beleza prática. De um amor concreto. Aqui o romance clássico está por fora. Aqui o amor é moderno. Não tem espaço para ciúme, para DRs, para dormir no sofá, para o tabefe. Seja amor de apartamento, ou amor de final de semana, ele acontece. Seja amor de balada, de caminhada, de mala arrumada, ele chega depressa. E São Paulo está cheio dele.

São Paulo não tem nada de marginal, nem de augusta, nem de paulista. São Paulo é outra coisa.

Seven year in São Paulo

Seven year ago I checked in at the New City Hotel. It was a raining day. I can say that the name and the weather were appropriated. Since then I’ve been learning how to live in a megacity. The excess of everything – information, culture, people – make us more focused. The big secret to survive in Sao Paulo for seven years? So far my answer is: simplify.

São Paulo of Piratininga

The name Piratininga comes from the tupi ¨dried-fish¨. Pirá = fish. Tininga = dried. In a reference to the death of fish at the margin of the Anhangabau river after the flood which ended up drying in the sun. Anhangabau is also from Tupi, it means the river of harms of the devil.

People

A city with more than 11 millions of people. The sixth largest in the world. The largest in the Americas (yes, it’s bigger than all American’s city). Bigger of the Southern America (this is not a big deal). The metropolitan area has nearly 20 millions. It only stays behind of Tokyo, Seoul and the City of Mexico. Here live Japanese, Italian, Jew, Muslims, Koreans, Indians, and more. It´s not just numbers. You get to know people from these nationalities. The quantity and the diversity of this population is seen in the queues. The greatest value of this megacity is the possibility of socialize and meet all these people.

Japonese

The Japanese from São Paulo are a particular case. They are the most paulistas of the paulistas. They only feel truly at home when they are in Sao Paulo. In the rest of Brazil and the world, even in Asian Countries, they are seen as foreigners. The contact with the Japanese culture is one of the best things of Sao Paulo.

How to differentiate Japanese, Chinese and Korean

It is important to do not generalize them. They are very different culturally and have some physical differences that over time become easier to be noticed. Pay attention to the size of the eyes: bigger eyes are Japanese, smallest belong to the Korean. The shape of the face: round shapes Chinese, triangular Japanese, square jaws Corean. Attention because here I´m generalizing on these details and especially: in the mix of Brazil they can trick you.

So, here comes an excuse

While in Belo Horizonte people usually starts a conversation with the saying ¨Here¨ in Sao Paulo they use the interjection ¨So¨. These interjections express in general, a task that can not be met satisfactorily, a postponement, an adversity, a lame excuse. Stay tuned, whenever someone answer to your question starting with the saying ¨So¨, the promise of a meeting, a visit, a delivering of product or service is compromised.

The Magic square and the bubble of Itaim

I lived six of my seven years in the suburb of Itaim Bibi (Itaim from the tupi language and means small rock), in a small area that I called my magic square. I wrote about it here. It is important to establish a simple routine and a field of actuation, where is possible to deepen and feel at home. A megacity is like those dark game’s maps such as Age of Empires, where you have to send scouts to venture and know the limits.

Do what you want to do

I’m not lead, I lead. This is the city’s motto. The city catchphrase. In Sao Paulo it’s necessary to know what you want to achieve. It’s necessary to take control of the things.

Gray and Green

These should be the colors of Sao Paulo. The gray from the concrete, the green from the ferns. Gray from the ¨minhocão¨, green from the Ibirapuera ( from the tupi, means rotten wood or rotten tree). Gray from the rain, green from felled trees. Gray from car’s plate, green from the lights.

Tribes and dirty words

¨Here in this tribe nobody wants their catechism. We speak your language, but we don’t understand your sermon. We laugh louder, drink and talk dirty. Although we don’t smile for nothing. We don’t smile for nothing.¨ by Arnaldo Antunes.

The land of drizzle

São Paulo isn’t anymore the land of drizzle. Drizzle, real drizzle, only once in while. The weather in Sao Paulo is in general very similar to the city: chaotic. It’s dawn with a blue sky, then rains, then gets cool, then heats and at the night we see a open sky again. To live in Sao Paulo is to always have with yourself a umbrella and a coat, even on a sunny summer day.

The tomb of the samba

São Paulo does not match with Samba. My opinion. Definitely. The smartass here are professional. The mulatto are in the magazine covers. The bohemia pays artistic cover charge and ten percent. Sao Paulo doesn’t have exuberant curves as Rio de Janeiro. However the city has some samba’s house and good sambistas ( of course, there is everything here) and the tribe of samba has it’s place. The exuberance of Sao Paulo it’s to be a jukebox.

There is Love in SP

Sao Paulo it is from a practice beauty. A concrete love. In here the classic romance is out. Here the love is modern. There is no room for jealousy, relationship discussions, to sleep in the couch, to a slap. Whatever is to an apartment love, or a weekend love, it happens. Whatever is a party love, a walking love, a ready to go love, it arrives quickly. And Sao Paulo it’s full of it. See you next.

O Gorila Invisível

Todos já nos pegamos em algum momento descobrindo coisas, lugares, até mesmo pessoas, que, por mais que estejam próximas e bem evidentes em nosso campo de visão ou cotidiano, nunca tínhamos notado. Coisas perdidas, lugares escondidos, pessoas invisíveis. Como designers, aprendemos em nossa formação várias técnicas e formas de direcionar o foco de atenção. Porém muitas vezes não entendemos exatamente como o processo de atenção funciona. O quanto de atenção podemos demandar de uma audiência em cada situação, ou colocado de outra forma, o quanto de informação pode ser processada e assimilada por uma pessoa em uma determinada mídia, depende do quanto esta pessoa pode e quer lhe oferecer naquele momento. Como atenção não quero dizer tempo dedicado. Atenção é tornar útil o tempo dedicado. Seja de visão, de audição, enfim de experiência. Já se pegou voltando vários parágrafos em um texto para pegar o fio da meada? Ou assistido um filme e no final não entender o desenrolar da história? Já passou ao lado de uma pessoa conhecida num shopping e incrivelmente não a perceber ou ser percebido?

Cegueira por Desatenção

Por coincidência (ou não), dois dos últimos livros que li – “Truques da Mente”, dos neurocientistas Stephen L. Macknik e Susana Martinez-Conde, e “Rápido e Devagar – Duas formas de Pensar” do prêmio Nobel de economia Daniel Kahneman – ilustram a cegueira causada pela desatenção com o mesmo exemplo. O experimento de Daniel Simons e Christopher Chabris é fascinante e ao mesmo tempo assustador. Eles montaram um pequeno vídeo onde duas equipes trocam passes de basquete. Uma das equipes com camisas brancas, e outra com camisas pretas. Os espectadores são instruídos a contar o número de passes feitos pelo time branco, ignorando o outro time. Se quiser você pode experimentar isso aqui. (abra em tela cheia e se concentre para contar os passes) O processo de contar absorve a atenção de tal forma que cerca de metade das pessoas que assistiram ao vídeo acima simplesmente não vê o gorila, embora este fique por nove segundos visível. Ele faz parte do experimento que também gerou um livro, todos com o mesmo nome do post: O gorila invisível. Se podemos não notar um gorila em um vídeo, imaginem quantas coisas passam despercebidas em nossas experiências diárias. É como estar no filme King Kong, olhando para o Empire State Building, e não perceber o gigante símio. Enfim, como designer me fascino pelo processo como um todo de direcionamento do foco de atenção, e como ser humano me assusto com as coisas invisíveis ao nosso olhar – entenda como olhar atenção, conhecimento, entendimento, realidade.

Como designer, pay attention

Num mundo onde a demanda por atenção é cada vez maior, conceber e entregar conteúdos sob medida para a atenção disponível é fator crucial para um design de experiências marcante. Desde contar uma história apenas com uma imagem ou 140 caracteres, até um filme de 3 horas filmado em 48 frames por segundo, o valor da experiência está no significado assimilado, e este passa pela atenção dedicada.

Como ser humano, preste atenção

Num mundo onde o déficit de atenção é quase que uma regra, dê valor as experiências que lhe agregam conhecimento, valor, significado. Sabe quando você está cercado de amigos e todos estão fazendo check-in no restaurante, ou checando as últimas mensagens via DM, RTs, Likes, etc? Pois é. Podemos estar nos tornando invisíveis. --x--

The invisible gorilla

At some point we all find ourselves discovering things, places, or people that can being close and very evident in our visual field or routine but we've never noticed. Lost things, lost places, invisible people. As designers we learn in our formation a lot of techniques and ways of direct the attention focus. However sometimes we don’t understand exactly how the process of attention works. How much of attention we can demand from an audience in each situation, or putting it in another way, how much of information can be processed and assimilated by one person in a particular media, it can depend of how much this person can and wants to offer you, at that moment. As attention I don’t mean the time spent. Attention it’s to make useful the time spent. It can be vision, hearing, anyway the experience. Have you ever caught yourself getting back to several paragraphs in a text to get back to the topic? Or watching a movie and in the end do not understand the whole story unfolds? Have you ever bumped into someone known in a mall and incredibly not notice or been noticed?

The blindeness by Innatention

Coincidentally (or not) two of the last book that I read – Tricks of the Mind, from the neuroscientists Stephen L. Macknik and Susana Martinez – Conde, and ¨Fast and Slow – Two ways do thinking¨ from the Nobel Prize of economic Daniel Kahneman – illustrate the blindness caused by the inattention with the same example. The experiment of Daniel Simons and Christopher Chabris is fascinating and at the same time scary. They set up an small video where two teams playing basketball. One team is wearing white shirts and the other wears black shirts. The viewers are invited to count the number of passes made by the white team, ignoring the other. If you wanna you can give it a try here ( just open it in a full screen and focus to count the passes). The process of counting absorbs the attention in a way that around half of viewers of the video above just do not see the gorilla, although it stays visible by 9 seconds. It’s a part of the experiment that also became a book, all with the same name of this post: The Invisible Gorilla. If we can not notice a Gorilla in a video, imagine how many things go unnoticed in our daily experiences. It’s just like being in the King Kong movie, looking to the Empire State Building and not realizing the giant ape. Anyway, as a designer I’m fascinated by the whole process of directing the focus of attention, and as a human being I get scary with the things invisible to our sight – as sight I mean attention, knowledge, understanding, reality.

As a designer, pay attention

In a world where the demand for attention is increasing, to designer and deliver content tailored to the attention available is a crucial factor to a designer of expressive experiences. Since to tell a story with only images or 140 characters until a movie with 3 hours filmed in 48 frames per second, the value of the experience is on the assimilated meaning and this goes through the attention dedicated.

As a human being, pay attention

In a world where the attention deficit is almost a rule, give value to the experiences that add you knowledge, value and meaning. Do you know when you are surrounded by friends and you are all checking in at the restaurant, or checking out the latest messages like DM, RTs, Likes, and more? Well, we might be becoming invisible. Em seus quadrinhos premiadíssimos, roteiros de filme e séries, livros infantis, romances, enfim qualquer coisa que escreva, estão suas histórias. Todas com aquela mistura de místico e real, de profundidade e deboche, de ironia e verdade. Leia seu blog, acompanhe suas postagens em seu tumblr e twitter, e, se tiver um tempo extra que queira investir bem, leia um de seus livros. Por coincidência, ou não, comecei o ano recebendo de um grande amigo um vídeo com um discurso de formatura do autor, onde ele dá dicas aos formandos para suas carreiras e vidas. Diferente dos famosos discursos de Steve Jobs ou Bill Gates, voltados para empreendedores e para aqueles que querem mudar o mundo, este é um para artistas da vida real. Neil Gaiman and a speech to inspire 2013

Neil Gaiman is one of my favourite writers. It may seem a bit silly, but he is a writer who knows how to tell stories. In his highly prized comics, scripts for movies and tv shows, children's book, romances, well in anything that he writers you see his stories. They all have that mix of mystic and real, of deep and mockery, of irony and truth. So read his blog, follow your posts on his tumblr and twitter and if you have an extra time you want to invest read one of his books. Coincidentally or not, I started the year receiving from a huge friend a video with a graduation speech of the author, where he gives advices to the students for their careers and lives. Differently of the famous speeches of Steve Jobs or Bill Gates, focused on entrepreneurs and to those who want to change the world, his speech is for artists of the real life. Instead of expound about the trends to 2013, the great ideas that can be become real this year, new technologies and other things, I found it appropriate to share with you the video here on the blog. MOOC’s, Flipped Classroom e a matemática da vida real

Pode ser divertido ensinar uma criança hoje em dia algo como matemática básica. A primeira coisa que me vem a mente é escolher um app interativo bem colorido e lúdico na App Store. Uma pesquisa rápida e descubro que posso ensinar a partir de “golpes de karatê”, de “gatinhos tocando instrumentos musicais”, de um “jogo de tabuleiro”, de “alienígenas e espaçonaves”, ou com mais de uma destas formas. As possibilidades são tantas que tenho de recorrer a um site de resenhas de aplicativos para crianças, como o apps4kids.net, para escolher aquele que melhor se adéqua à criança. Se for filha de músicos, vá nos gatinhos. Se for filha de um lutador de MMA, que tal karatê?! Esta nova gama de ferramentas e aplicações educativas vem sendo desenvolvidas utilizando novas mídias, vídeos, jogos interativos, apps para tablets e smartphones. O objetivo, a efetividade do aprendizado, pode ser alcançado de forma divertida, interativa, social. Imagine agora isto em larga escala, em salas virtuais com dezenas (até milhares) de pessoas. Se você for da minha época vai se lembrar da fatídica tabuada. Se eu fosse uma criança de hoje não iria querer estudar em uma sala de aulas clássica, decorando isso vezes aquilo... Que atraso... Mas as coisas caminham rápido nos dias de hoje, e a grande aposta para um futuro muito em breve é que uma das próximas áreas a serem totalmente reformuladas será a educação. Bem, além de aplicativos “bonitinhos e coloridinhos”, por onde devo começar? Duas coisas que você precisa acompanhar sobre este assunto.

1. MOOC’s

Massive open online course (MOOC) é um tipo de curso online de acesso livre via internet com objetivo de atingir a todos em larga escala. São a bola da vez no ensino a distância. Exemplos como Khan Academy e Coursera são claros direcionamentos de para onde segue o EAD. No Coursera por exemplo você pode fazer um curso de 7 semanas de Introdução ao Pensamento Matemático, e aprender como os matemáticos pensam, com um professor da Stanford University. Duas aulas por semana, discussões monitoradas, trabalhos em grupo, exame final, tudo o que você espera de uma graduação, porém totalmente a distância, sem custo (a não ser investimento do seu tempo e motivação). No Khan Academy você pode praticar seus conhecimentos em matemática desde adição e subtração, até cálculo diferencial. Diversos de tipos de exercícios interativos, visuais, com ajuda, vídeos explicativos, e uma série de “inteligências artificiais” para que seu desenvolvimento e motivação sejam progressivos.

2. FLIPPED CLASSROOM

O conceito de aula invertida é simples: ao invés de usar o tempo em sala de aula para apresentar os conceitos da aula (no quadro negro, ou nos livros didáticos), usa-se este tempo (onde está presente o professor) para discutí-los, exercitá-los, aplicá-los. No EAD podemos utilizá-lo num formato de blended learning, geralmente através de animações e vídeo aulas criadas pelos professores e educadores para que os alunos assistam antes da aula, e assim deixar o tempo na classe para solução de problemas e aplicação prática dos conceitos. No TED-Ed (braço educacional do TED) por exemplo, além de transformarem os conteúdos das principais apresentações do TED em material para uso em sala de aula, eles criaram um framework que permite alunos e professores personalizarem os conteúdos. No site do TED-Ed, clicando no botão “Flip This Lesson”, qualquer um pode transformar qualquer dos vídeos em seu próprio material de ensino, se colocando assim no papel de professor. É genial! E como estamos falando de matemática até aqui, na série “Matemática da vida real”, além de assistir vídeos com uma abordagem inteligente para os assuntos, você tbm pode exercitar os conhecimentos aprendidos, se aprofundar neles, e a cereja do bolo, “Flip the Lesson”, customizar e compartilhar a lição. Ou seja, você pode realmente se apropriar dos conhecimentos. E isso é só o começo do fim do atual modelo de ensino. --x--

MOOC'S, Flipped Classrom and maths in the real life

It can be fun to teach kids nowadays something as basic as math. The first thing that comes to my mind is to choose an interactive, colourful and playfully application at the App Store. A quick search and I found that I can teach from “ karate blows”, from “cats playing musical instruments”, from a “board game” , from “aliens and spaceships”, or with more than one of these forms. There are so many possibilities that I have to resort a website with reviews about apps for kids, as apps4kids.net to choose the one that best suits to the children. If it's a musician's daughter, the cats app. If it's a MMA fighter kid, what about the karate app? This news range of educational tools and applications have been developed using new medias, videos, interactive games, apps for tablets and smart phones. The purpose, the effectiveness of learning can be reached in a fun, interactive and social way. So guess all this in a large scale, in virtual classes with dozens (even thousand) of people. If you are my age will remember of the fateful multiplication bases. If I was a kid in nowadays I wouldn't want to study In a classic classroom , memorising this times that … What a delay. However things move fast these days, and the big odds to a closer future is that one of next areas to be completely reformulated is the education field. Well, besides “cute and colorful” applications, from where should I start? The two things you need to keep up on this.

1. MOOC'S

Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) it's a kind of online course with free access through the internet in order to reach everyone in a large scale. They are the next big thing in distance learning. The examples like Khan Academy and Coursera are clear directions of the direction to where the DL is going. At Coursera, for example you can take a 7 weeks course of introduction to the Mathematical Thinking and learn how the mathematicians think with a teacher from Stanford University. Two classes per week, monitored discussions, teamwork, final exams, and everything you expect from a graduation, yet entirely distance and with no cost at all (besides the investment of your time and motivation). The Khan Academy allows you to practice your knowledge in maths since addiction and subtraction , to differential calculus. There are various types of visual and interactive exercises, with the help of instructional games and a series of “ artificial intelligence” to make your development and motivation progressive.

2. FLIPPED CLASSROOM

The concept of an inverted class is simple: instead of using the time in class to show the concepts about the class (in the blackboard or in the textbooks) this time is used to (where the teacher is present) discuss, exercise and apply them. At the DL we can use them in a blended learning format, usually through animations and video classes created by teachers and educators so students can watch the classes, and leave the time in class for the solution of problems and concepts applications. At TED-Ed (education arms form TED) for example, besides transform the mains content from TED’s presentations in material to be used in classroom, they also created an framework that allows the students and teachers to customize the content. At TED-Ed website by clicking ¨Flip the Lesson¨ anyone can transform any of the videos in your own teaching material, placing himself in the teacher’s place. It’s awesome! As we are talking about math so far, in the series ¨Mathematics of the real life¨ besides watching to videos as an intelligent approach, you can also exercise all your knowledge learned, go deeper in that and the icing on the cake ¨Flip the Lesson¨ being able to customize and share lessons. In others word, you can really take ownership of knowledge. And this is only the beginning of the end of the actual teaching method.

O que aprender com House – 5 dicas de gestão de equipes

Não é segredo para ninguém - e agora menos ainda - que sou um grande fã da série de TV "House". Diálogos inteligentes, temas delicados abordados nos capítulos e arcos, um anti-herói clássico, e vários casos intrigantes para serem desvendados por um tipo de Sherlock Holmes da medicina. Não dá para negar que o Dr. Gregory House é um personagem ranzinza, arrogante, insensível e muitas vezes estúpido. O médico e o monstro. Não tenho a intenção de dar dicas sobre como ser um gestor como o House. Até porque, como diz o próprio personagem, é preciso merecer todos estes predicados. Porém me interessa bastante a forma como ele monta suas equipes durante a série e cultiva o trabalho de cada um. Seu estilo de gestão, por mais inortodoxo que seja, possui características interessantes. Vejamos 5 características deste estilo de gestão nestas dicas:

1. Compartilha a inteligência do projeto.

Esta dica é o coração do trabalho do House: a arte do diagnóstico. Tudo começa com sintomas que indicam a existência de uma anomalia. Estes são analisados de forma a montar um diagnóstico de possíveis causas, a partir da avaliação do paciente, do que ele sente e do contexto do caso. Este diagnóstico é validado com análises clínicas e de respostas aos tratamentos destes sintomas. Muita vezes os tratamentos tem de ir se adaptando à evolução dos sintomas. Geralmente um diagnóstico só é conclusivo após todo este processo. Toda a equipe participa do processo de diagnosticar a necessidade. Os personagens crescem como profissionais e aprendem com o Dr. House neste momento. Durante o processo as atividades de conversa com o paciente, de coleta e análise de exames, de aplicação de um tratamento, são delegadas. Porém o processo de inteligência do caso é compartilhado.

2. Não acredita no óbvio. Questiona.

Uma das características do Dr. House é seu ceticismo. E ele transforma este ceticismo em uma ferramenta essencial na busca por diagnósticos corretos. Esta dica tem aplicações tanto práticas quanto mais amplas. Práticas no que se refere ao processo de briefing, de levantamento de dados e relatórios, de avaliação de resultados. Questionar é a melhor forma de aumentar o entendimento que se tem de algum dado ou informação - de onde ela veio, de quem, em que contexto, com qual finalidade. Criar um ambiente onde se possa questionar abertamente as escolhas, os dados e as informações de cada caso - cada projeto - é essencial para buscar diagnósticos corretos - resultados. Mais amplas no que se refere ao contexto do mundo corporativo atual, onde tratamos com sistemas de informação cada vez mais complexos. Neste contexto, respostas óbvias, processos "by the book", metodologias engessadas, são extremamente duvidosas.

3. Conhece as motivações pessoais dos membros de sua equipe.

No seriado, cada personagem possui uma história complexa, que lhe motiva a trabalhar com o Dr. House. E ele trabalha sua relação com cada médico de forma diferenciada, cobrando, incentivando, desafiando, motivando, de acordo com este motivo maior, esta aspiração. Faz questão de os colocar em situações difíceis - como a de dar más notícias a pacientes - e de questionar cada uma de suas escolhas. O processo de evolução profissional pede por desafios, pelo inusitado, por obstáculos. Parte da função de um gestor de equipes é criar estes obstáculos, e não retirá-los ou facilitá-los para que sejam facilmente transponíveis.

5. Não cria "cerimônias" demais.

Vou usar como exemplo aqui as reuniões de trabalho, mas pode se aplicar para vários outros tipos de formalidades ou solenidades. Se você também acha que reuniões periódicas de gestão são pouco produtivas: atenção! House não costuma agendar reuniões - nem com sua equipe, nem com sua superior (Dra. Cuddy), nem com ninguém. As reuniões para discutir os casos acontecem - claro em todos os episódios - mas elas ocorrem sob demanda, ou seja, quando e onde são necessárias. Se existe um problema - um caso - a equipe se reune e discute possíveis diagnósticos e tratamentos para os sintomas apresentados. Isso pode acontecer em um corredor do hospital, na sala do House, no refeitório, junto com o paciente - repito: onde e quando são necessárias.

It’s not a secret to anyone – specially now – that I’m a big fan of the TV series ¨House¨. Intelligent dialogues, sensitive topics discussed through chapters, a classic anti-hero, and several intriguing cases to be solved by a kind of Sherlock Holmes of medicine. It can´t be deny that Dr. Gregory House is a grumpy, arrogant, insensitive and often ignorant character. The doctor and the monster. I have no intention of giving tips about how to be a manager as House. Even because, as the character says I have to deserve all these predicates. Although interests me a lot the way how he assembles his team during the show and how he cultivates the work of each one. His style of management, even though unorthodox, has interesting features. Let’s see 5 features of this way of management:

1. Share the Project Intelligence.

This tip is the heart of House’s work: the art of diagnosis. Everything starts with a symptom that indicate the existence of an anomaly. However the process of intelligence of the case it is shared.

In the TV Show each character has a complex history that motivates to work with Dr. House. And he works the relationship with each doctor in a different way, demanding, stimulating, challenging, and motivating, according to this main reason, this aspiration.
